Port Said by Horse Drawn Carriage

Horse drawn carriages will be the mode of transportation for your tour today. Port Said, named after Said Pasha, the ruler of Egypt in 1854, was destroyed during the 7 Day War with Israel in 1967 which resulted in the eventual closure of the Suez Canal.

Port Said was reclaimed and rebuilt in 1973 becoming a tax free zone attracting settlers from all over Egypt. Today, its population numbers close to 2 million people.

Meet your guide on the pier and stroll together to de Lesseps monument, dedicated to the French engineer responsible for the construction of the canal. The monument is situated at the end of the beachfront promenade. Here, board your awaiting carriages and continue to the Military Museum where a display of exhibits leaves a strong sense of the Canal's embattled history. Included are tanks and artillery from the Israeli Egyptian confrontation during the October War of 1973 which resulted in the consequent reclaim of the city of Port Said and the canal.

Continue through the city, viewing its various landmarks. You will pass along the street overlooking the canal, the northern end of the Suez Canal, the beautiful Salaam (peace) Mosque, the Roman Cathedral where a stop will be made for an inside visit, the Italian Consulate, the Town Hall, Port Said's main Square with its imposing Obelisk Memorial, the National Stadium and the main shopping streets of the city, ending at the pier where your ship is docked.

 

Special Notes:
Comfortable walking shoes and a sun hat recommended.

Tour suitable for elderly people but not wheel chair confined.

Horse drawn carriages carry 4 pax at a time. Maximum number used 2 persons per carriage.

Cameras and videos are not allowed in the military museum. .
